Northern New Mexico Unit 4
This is our ranch within unit 4.
All elk hunting takes place on private property in New Mexico's big game hunting unit 4. Our private property resides about 30 miles south east of Chama, New Mexico and borders unit 52 which is public land. Our property is surrounded by other private properties to the north, south, and west and it is all hunted during this same time frame.
Our meeting location will be just outside Alamosa, Colorado at my personal residence. More complete directions of the exact location will be given in the information packet we send out to booked hunters. At my house, a shooting range is provided there to confirm weapon and hunter performance before leaving to the trail head. Grouse Mesa Outfitters will transport all hunters and their gear to the cabin from the trail head. We have a parking lot for all hunters' vehicles either at the trail head or at my house; preferably at the trail head if you bring a truck. No hunter vehicle is allowed at the cabin. The trail head is a two hour drive from my house. From the trail head we will go on a two and a half hour horseback ride to the cabin while the guides take the gear around in their trucks.
We recommend flying into Alamosa from Denver if the hunter chooses not to drive. There is a taxi service that can take you to your hotel from the airport, but most hotels have a shuttle service that can pick you up or drop you off. Alburquerque is the closest major airport and car rentals are easily accessible there. It is a 3 hour drive north from Alburquerque, a 5 hour drive south from denver. However, it is best to drive if possible to bring all your gear and especially to carry your meat back with you without the expense of extra baggage that weighs over the limit.
